BLACKBERRY LOYALIST: President Obama finally lets go of his BlackBerry

 
BlackBerry was loved for its smartphones that offered the tactile hardware QWERTY keyboard and the infamous BlackBerry Messenger which helped make it a trend setter. The youth took to it, while the US Government preferred it thanks to the state-of-the-art security and enterprise solutions, making it one of the hottest selling mobile phones.
However, times have changed and BlackBerry is no longer the smartphone everyone wants. While the company is still around, it has certainly lost its charm.
Interestingly, when President Obama entered office, he was a ‘BlackBerry Boy’ and was using it until recently when he confirmed that he’s ditched his BlackBerry for a new device. While he hasn’t confirmed exactly which smartphone he is using, but at a recent appearance on a talk show, he spoke about how he was given a new smartphone this year.
Obama had entered office in 2009 as a “high-tech president” with his BlackBerry and at that time, BlackBerry maker RIM (Research In Motion) was making good money. The coming years saw the development of Android and Apple coming in with iPhone, but Obama stuck to his BlackBerry for obvious security reasons.
At the talk show, Obama told Jimmy Fallon, “I was the first president to have a BlackBerry, and so years passed and no one else has BlackBerrys. Then finally this year they said ‘Good news Mr. President, we’re going to give you a state-of-the-art smartphone instead of a BlackBerry.’ I thought, alright, this is cool I’m excited, and I get the thing and they’re like, Mr. President, for security reasons it doesn’t take pictures, you can’t text, the phone doesn’t work, you can’t play your music on it.”

The 3 biggest ways self-driving cars will improve our lives


Driverless cars will be here before you know it.
Several automakers have already showed off their self-driving car technology and many car companies aim to roll out production vehicles with driverless capabilities by 2020. Industry experts expect fully autonomous vehicles to follow suit just a few years later.
This era of driverless cars will transform our lives in more ways than one, Erik Coelingh, Volvo’s Senior Technical Leader for Safety and Driver Support Technologies, told Tech Insider.
While it’s still too early to know all of the ways autonomous vehicles will impact our lives, Coelingh, who is helping lead Volvo’s driverless car program, said he does foresee self-driving cars bringing more advantages than disadvantages.
Here are three key ways Coelingh said autonomous vehicles will improve our lives.


Roads will be safer.

In the US, more than 30,000 people die in traffic-related deaths every years. But self-driving cars could drastically reduce the number of accidents helping to save thousands of lives.
“There’s huge, huge potential in making traffic safer than it is today,” Coelingh said. “That is one of the big reasons for us that we entered this field.”
In fact, if about 90% of cars on American roads were autonomous, the number of accidents would fall from 6 million a year to 1.3 million. Deaths would fall from 33,000 to 11,300, according to a study by the Eno Centre for Transportation

Traffic and fuel efficiency will greatly improve.

 Self-driving cars will make driving more efficient on all fronts, Coelingh said.
“There’s potential in efficiency, efficiency in terms of better traffic flow, but also less fuel consumption,” Coelingh said.
Because cars will be automated, there will be less chance of accidents caused by human error, leading to less traffic congestion. It’s also expected that the rise of self-driving taxis will help decrease the total number of cars on the road, alleviating the overall traffic.
What’s more, because driverless vehicles are designed to optimize efficiency in acceleration and braking, they will also help improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
In fact, adoption of autonomous cars could reduce CO2 emissions produced by cars by as much as 300 million tons per year, according to McKinsey.


You will have more free time.

 

With cars doing most or all of the driving, you will be free to make the most of your time spent in the vehicle, Coelingh said.
And because traffic congestion is also expected to decrease, it will likely take you less time to get to your destination, which will also help create more valuable time for other things besides commuting.
"You as a driver, you can get back your own time," Coelingh said. "And you can use it in a better way than just staring at the car in front of you,"
According to McKinsey, commuters worldwide could save a combined 1 billion hours everyday once autonomous vehicles go mainstream.

Facebook vs Google+: Mark Zuckerberg on a mission to destroy Google’s social network


Facebook is the biggest and most successful social network today. But, back in 2011, for a relatively newer company like Facebook, prepping to face a competitor like Google could have been worrisome. Mark Zuckerberg knew what was ahead, and decided to leave no stone unturned to crush the then upcoming Google Plus. No one knew of the fate of Google Plus or Facebook then. But, Zuckerberg made it a mission to destroy the Google’s social network no matter what the cost, reveals an ex-Facebook employee.
Yes, there’s a new tell-all book – Chaos Monkeys: Obscene Fortune and Random Failure in Silicon Valley – by an ex-Facebook employee named Antonio Garcia Martinez, giving us (via Vanity Fair) some of the inside tales of the shiny Zuckerberg empire. He said the moment GooglePlus was launched, Zuckerberg couldn’t think of anything but destroying it, and to such a great extent that the social network went into a lockdown state. “Lockdown was a state of war that dated to Facebook’s earliest days, when no one could leave the building while the company confronted some threat, either competitive or technical,” Martinez explained in his book.
Zuckerberg also gave his first ‘lockdown’ speech the day Google Plus was launched, which clearly stated Rthe phrase ‘Carthago delenda est.  It meant Carthage (Google in this case) must be destroyed. Posters were put across the campus to remind employees of the mission.
By then, it was a full blown war. Google didn’t see Facebook as threat, and thought its search monopoly will help it wade through it. The company launched Google Plus! While most of us found those forceful Google Plus sign-ups annoying, Facebook saw it as one of the biggest threats, and it were. There were other factors working for Google Plus too. For instance, it had no ads. “This was the classic one-hand-washing-the-other tactic of the ruthless monopolist, like Microsoft using the revenue from Windows to crush Netscape Navigator with Explorer back in the 90s. By owning search, Google would bankroll taking over social media as well,” Martinez said.
“Zuck took it as an existential threat comparable to the Soviets’ placing nukes in Cuba in 1962. Google Plus was the great enemy’s sally into our own hemisphere, and it gripped Zuck like nothing else,” Martinez writes.
Meanwhile, the lockdown went into action with cafes opened on weekends, shuttles running between Palo Alto and San Francisco on weekends, and Facebook turned into a seven days working company with a little concession of seeing your family on weekends. “By whatever means, employees were expected to be in and on duty. In what was perceived as a kindly concession to the few employees with families, it was also announced that families were welcome to visit on weekends and eat in the cafés, allowing the children to at least see Daddy (and, yes, it was mostly Daddy) on weekend afternoons,” writes Martinez.
On the Google Plus launch day, the author noticed an Ads product manager named Paul Adams with Zuckerberg. Adams was earlier a product designer for Google Plus, and with the launch of the product, no longer tied to a non-disclosure agreement with Google. On the other hand, Google had a policy wherein it would beat any Facebook offer.
Soon Vic Gundotra, the man ‘responsible’ for Google Plus  spoke about great numbers, which were taken serious earlier, but soon it was released that Google took into account any click on the Google Plus, which was mandatory tied to its other products. Gundotra never acknowledged Facebook and reportedly even said “Networks are for networking. Circles are for the right people.” Obviously referring to Google Circles.
Soon Gundotra’s exit hit headlines, and report of Google diverting Google Plus teams to Android started making news. That was a sign of relief for Facebook, and they knew they had won the war.
“I decided to do some reconnaissance. En route to work one Sunday morning, I skipped the Palo Alto exit on the 101 and got off in Mountain View instead. Down Shoreline I went and into the sprawling Google campus. I made my way there and contemplated the parking lot. It was empty. Completely empty. I got back on the 101 North and drove to Facebook. At the California Avenue building, I had to hunt for a parking spot. The lot was full. It was clear which company was fighting to the death,” writes Martinez.

Norway Might Try To Ban Gas-Powered Cars


Norway might try to leave gasoline in the dust.
The Scandinavian country’s four major political parties reportedly agreed last week to ban the sale of gas- and diesel-powered cars by 2025, according to Electrek, citing a story in Norwegian paper Dagens Næringsliv. Though there’s some dispute about whether all parties actually support the proposal, it appears to be more ambitious than similar plans that have been considered recently in other parts of the world. 
India and the Netherlands have both batted around proposals to stop sales of gas-powered cars in the coming decades. Neither country has enacted a plan to see this through yet. In addition, several U.S. states, including New York and California, have weighed banning sales of gas-fueled cars by 2050. In contrast, Norway would seek to phase out gas-powered car sales much sooner.
The country has a history of enthusiasm for electric cars. In 2013, Norway installed charging stations for electric vehicles from the popular manufacturer Tesla, before any other European country got around to it. Thanks in part to some of the world’s sweetest tax breaks for electric vehicles, Norway registered 50,000 electric cars in April, a full two years before it had planned to do so.
Now, nearly a quarter of all new cars hitting Norwegian roads are electric, and the country boasts the highest proportion of electric vehicles of any nation.
Over half of Norway’s energy needs are met using renewable power sources. Since charging an electric car requires drawing power from the national power grid, switching to exclusively electric cars in Norway could cut greenhouse gas emissions morethan doing so in, say, the U.S., where renewables currently make up only 13 percent of the energy mix.
Despite embracing renewables at home, Norway remains one of the world’s largest exporters of petroleum, and oil wealth has funded much of the country’s vigorous renewable energy program. But low oil prices are rocking the country’s petroleum industry, and Norway’s sovereign wealth fund has been divesting from fossil fuels in recent years.
It’s not clear whether all the country’s political parties are actually on board with a ban targeting gas-powered vehicle sales, however.
While the country’s two left-leaning parties confirmed their support for the plan, the two conservative parties denied agreeing to it, according to a report in Quartz. Per Sandberg, deputy leader of the country’s right-wing Progress Party, said the proposal was “not realistic.”
But the confusion didn’t stop Tesla CEO Elon Musk from congratulating Norway on a potential ban:

In terms of ASUS Z2 Poseidon specs, its is said to sport a 6.0-inch Quad HD display, a new Intel chip (said to be a 2017 version), a 16MP rear + 5MP front camera set, up to 6GB RAM, and 256GB of internal memory. Besides, Android N OS and a massive 6,000mAh battery are also mentioned as what stay under the hood to run the whole machine.

2. ASUS Z1 Titan

The Titan looks strong both inside and outside. The design somehow reminds us of the gaming laptop series ASUS ROG. Pretty cool, rite?! As for ASUS Z1 Titan specs, they will offer 6GB of RAM, 256GB of ROM, a Snapdragon 830 processor, and a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED Quad HD screen. Additionally, Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, a 3,500mAh battery, and a package of 16MP main cam with a dual LED flash plus 5MP secondary one also get on board to run the device.

3. Symetium

Symetium specs are expected to pack a 5.0-inch Full HD OLED screen protected by Gorilla Glass 4, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip set, a big 4,000mAh batt, and 4G LTE connectivity. What is more interesting is that the machine will boast gigantic 6GB RAM paired with 64/128/256GB ROM, a USB Type-C port, a 24MP primary + 5MP selfie snapper combo, IP67 certification for being dust and water resistant, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.

4. ZTE Nubia X8

Actually there will be 3 variants of ZTE Nubia X8. One will be an entry model powered by a Snapdragon 820 chip, 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM and Full HD resolution. Another is a mid-ranger equipped with an SD 820, 4GB RAM, 32GB/64GB ROM and QHD resolution. The other will be a high-end flagship owning an SD 823, 6GB RAM, 128GB/256GB ROM, and UHD resolution. Wow, the last version is really a beast. All of them will have the same 6.44-inch screens, yet the rest of the ZTE Nubia X8 specs still remain unknown.

5. Samsung Galaxy Note 6


Recently leaks have mentioned that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 6 will be coded as SM-N930. Spec-wise, it is very likely to come with a 5.77-inch 2K display, 6GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM. Nonetheless, other Samsung Galaxy Note 6 specs have not been unveiled yet. Hopefully more information about this flagship will be announced in the next weeks.

6. Lenovo ZUK Z2 Pro

Not long ago, Lenovo ZUK Z2 Pro was released. Being a successor to Lenovo ZUK Z1 2015, the device seems much stronger thanks to sporting a 5.2-inch Full HD AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 820 chipset, a 3,100mAh battery supported by Quick Charge 3.0 tech, Android Marshmallow OS, 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM. Furthermore, there are a combo of 13MP ISOCELL rear (with f/1.8, 4K video recording, plus PDAF) + 8MP f/2.0 front-facing shooter, a fingerprint sensor, 4G LTE and VoLTE support on board to support the Z2 Pro.

ROBOT ARE TAKING OUR JOBS: WORKERS LAMENTS

It's no surprise that technology is getting better, faster, and smarter. But is it at the expense of its makers?
Anxiety has been building around the second machine age and its implications for our economic future, and it may have reached a tipping point.
Just last week, Silicon Valley venture capitalists and executives published an open letter on the digital economy, calling for public-policy changes and new organizational models to account for this era of drastic technological change.

The authors write, "The digital revolution is the best economic news on the planet."
But not everyone agrees. Several scholars have been sounding the alarm on the danger of technological progress.
During a presentation at the Carnegie Council for Ethics and International Affairs this week, researcher Wendell Wallach said technology is now destroying more jobs than it creates.
"This is an unparalleled situation and one that I think could actually lead to all sorts of disruptions once the public starts to catch on that we are truly in the midst of technological unemployment," said Wallach, a consultant, ethicist, and scholar at the Yale University Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics.

Martin Ford, a software developer and Silicon Valley entrepreneur, recently published the book "Rise of the Robots" in an effort to generate a conversation around the prospect of a jobless future. 
We're not worried enough, he says. Most people don't understand the "mind-boggling" speed that technology is advancing at. 
"When people talk about robots, they're mostly imagining factories, but the factory jobs have been gone for decades," Ford tells Business Insider.


In May, Shenzhen Evenwin Precision Technology, a manufacturing company based out of Dongguan in southern China, announced it would soon be replacing 90% of its 1,800 employees with machinesThe 200 employees not receiving pink slips will take on a new role — overseeing the robotic workforce.
This is part of a larger trend in southern China, where robots are poised to invade several manufacturing companies.
If that isn't unsettling enough, consider the Oxford University study, "The Future of Employment: How Susceptible are Jobs to Computerization," which predicts that 47% of US jobs could be automated within one to two decades. 
It's no longer just the "dangerous, dirty, and dull" jobs on the block. Technology is also poised to replace white-collar positions, like lawyers, reporters, and financial analysts, to name a few.
While certain sectors, such as healthcare and education, are safer than others for the time being, Ford believes most industries will eventually be at risk. 
But it's not as much about what industry you work in, Ford explains, as it is the function you perform. Think about your job, he says, and consider whether or not any smart person could figure out how to do it if they watched you work or studied your past work patterns.
If so, then it's a pretty good bet that an algorithm will eventually be able to figure it out as well, he warns. "If you look far enough into the future, say 50 years and beyond, there aren't any jobs that you could say absolutely for sure are going to be safe."
With creative computing underway, even the most artful of jobs could be at risk. Algorithms can now write symphonies and paint original paintings, Ford tells us.

"We should be concerned," says Ford. "Primarily because we don't have an alternate for people to lose their jobs.
"I'm not arguing that the technology is a bad thing. It could be a great thing if the robots did all our jobs and we didn't have to work. The problem is that your job and income are packaged together. So if you lose your job, you also lose your income, and we don't have a very good system in place to deal with that."

The economic consequences could be dramatic, he says. Jobs drive consumption, and consumption drives our economy.
"Without consumers, we're not going to have an economy. No matter how talented you are as an individual, you've got to have a market to sell it to," Ford says. "We need most people to be OK. We need some reasonable level of broad-based prosperity if we're going to continue to have a vibrant, consumer-driven economy."

Of course, what Ford sees as a disaster, others see as an opportunity. The New York Times recently highlighted a study by the McKinsey Global Institute that presents a more cheerful outlook.
"By 2025, McKinsey estimates, these digital talent platforms could add $2.7 trillion a year to global gross domestic product," the Times wrote. "And the digital tools, the report states, could benefit as many as 540 million people in various ways, including better matches of their skills with jobs, higher wages, and shorter stints of unemployment."

Other experts point to the Industrial Revolution, which ultimately led to more employment opportunities, and say the same will happen during the second machine age. Some believe an increase in computing prowess will simply eliminate old jobs and introduce new ones, resulting in a net-zero effect — or even an increase in jobs.
However, Ford doesn't believe the past will predict the future in this case. "On January 2, 2010, The Washington Post reported that the first decade of the 21st century resulted in the creation of no new jobs. Zero," he writes in "Rise of the Robots." "In other words, during those first 10 years there were about 10 million missing jobs that should have been created — but never showed up."
The solution to this job displacement is not a simple one. 
In the past, when low-skilled workers lost their jobs to technology, the conventional advice was to go to school for a better education and training and find more intellectual work in an office. This solution will no longer be effective, Ford says, because technology is coming after those higher-skilled jobs as well.

Investment in education and training will unlikely solve our problems. We must look beyond conventional policy prescriptions," says Ford.  
His solution is a radical one: To effectively restructure our entire system.
Ford suggests a guaranteed income.
"You give people a minimum — a survivable income. Not something so generous that they just sit around and do nothing, but you give them enough so they don't have to worry about basic survival," he explains. "Some people would be lazy, but most others would want more and would work part-time, start small businesses, or work a more traditional job if they could find one."
Ford is not the only one proposing such extreme changes. 
Scott Santens, a leader in the basic-income movement — a worldwide network of thousands of advocates — agrees that job growth is not keeping pace with technology and encourages government-provided income as a remedy.
"It's not just a matter of needing basic income in the future; we need it now," Santens told The Atlantic. "People don't see it, but we are already seeing the effects all around us, in the jobs and pay we take, the hours we accept, the extremes inequality is reaching, and in the loss of consumer spending power."
It's unlikely Ford and Santens' proposal would become a reality, at least any time soon. "In today's environment, such a radical solution is completely unthinkable," Ford admits. "But the paradox is that it's ultimately what we're going to need in the future. It's unclear how we're going to get there."
